Including acupuncture in your care

We are sometimes asked whether acupuncture can be part of a person's support. For some people living with disability, and for their carers, acupuncture may help with persistent aches and pains, muscle tension, sleep and everyday stress, as a complement to the care provided by their doctor, specialists and therapists.

Before starting, speak with your GP and with us. Choose an AHPRA-registered Chinese medicine practitioner who takes the time to understand your history, medication and communication needs, and who is happy to adjust the appointment, such as a shorter session, a quieter time or a support person present.

Check with your plan manager or support coordinator whether your plan can fund it. If not, many people pay privately or use the extras cover of their private health insurance.

And Chinese herbal medicine?

Some people also ask about Chinese herbal medicine. An AHPRA-registered Chinese medicine practitioner can prepare a formula for the person, to sit alongside the care they already receive. Herbs and prescribed medicines can interact, so share the details with your doctor and pharmacist before taking anything, and be especially careful in pregnancy and with children, where the doctor's agreement comes first.

Get in touch

We would be glad to talk through your goals and the support that would suit you best.

General information only, not personal medical advice. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine complement, and do not replace, standard medical care. Please tell your GP and treating team before beginning a new therapy.
